History - English Channel ( La Manica) and The Battle of Britain

The English Channel is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates Great Britain from northern France, and joins the North Sea to the Atlantic. It is about 560 km long and varies in width from 240 km  at its widest, to only 34 km (21 mi) in the Strait of Dover. It is the smallest of the shallow seas around the continental shelf of Europe.

On the sky of the English Cannel, took place "The Battle of Britain" the air campaign waged by the German Air Force against the United Kingdom during the summer and autumn of 1940. The objective of the campaign was to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force (RAF), especially Fighter Command. The Battle of Britain marked the first defeat of Hitler's military forces, with air superiority seen as the key to victory. The British triumph in the Battle of Britain was won at a heavy cost. The end of the battle allowed Britain to rebuild its military forces and establish itself as an Allied stronghold.

Industry vs artisan culture - The concept of narrow in Artigian Culture

In the early Middle Ages windows were simply openings in the wall, that admitted wind, and even glazed windows were poorly insulated. Thus builders often made windows rather narrow to minimize drafts and loss of eath.

Paul B. Newman, Daily life in the Middle Ages, McFarland & Company, 2001

Windows in a castle in the middle ages were rare. On the second floor, where the royal family stayed, there might be a few windows to not spread eath. The only other window like things were small openings in the wall for arrows to be shot at enemies.

Thing - Aperture

In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture of an optical system is the opening that determines the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane. The aperture determines how collimated the admitted rays are, which is of great importance for the appearance at the image plane. If an aperture is narrow, then highly collimated rays are admitted, resulting in a sharp focus at the image plane. If an aperture is wide, then uncollimated rays are admitted, resulting in a sharp focus only for rays with a certain focal length. This means that a wide aperture results in an image that is sharp around what the lens is focusing on and blurred otherwise. The aperture also determines how many of the incoming rays are actually admitted and thus how much light reaches the image plane (the narrower the aperture, the darker the image for a given exposure time).

Thing - Funnel

A funnel is a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth and a narrow stem. It is used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening. Without a funnel, spillage would occur.
