Definition of the words

ampio – stretto    Italian

ampio: from Latin amplus, ampio, large, big.
stretto: from Latin stric-tus, perfective passive participle of stringere (tighten).



What is wide?




Adjective
-    Having a large physical extent from side to side.

“We walked down a wide corridor”.
-    Large in scope.
“The inquiry had a wide remit”.
-    (sports) Operating at the side of the playing area.
That team needs a decent wide player.

Adverb
-    extensively
“He travelled far and wide”.
-    completely
“He was wide awake”.
-    away from a given goal
“The arrow fell wide of the mark”.


What is narrow?

narrow
-    having a small width; not wide; slim; slender; having opposite edges or sides that are close, especially by comparison to length or depth.

-    (figuratively) Restrictive; without flexibility or latitude.
